History of Chapel
The chapel is made from the Chichester Cathedral spire, in 1850. You are looking at untouched cut blocks and you do not have to go to the dizzy heights of the Cathedral to see them, each one hand cut for this purpose. You will notice smaller and smaller block work. It is estimated the stone was cut about 800-900 years ago and comes from France.
The ironi, the building itself, is ReclaimFun, from the rubble of the cathedral, something special was formed, TimeMachineFun.
Groups come to the building just to see this. They try to work out the jigsaw puzzle that now makes the wall. They look at the 'craft marks', different strokes, showing a spectrum of craft people and tools.
In 1937 the congregational chapel came back into private hands. (If you want to see the orginal documents they can be brought to the chapel). Then in 1969, the parade ground to the west was added, thanks to the Portal familiy.
At this time, the new roof was formed, amongst other things. In 2005 the chapel was in a bad way. 38 years after the parade grounds was added, the clocktrust brought the freehold to the property and started to clear the land.
Special care was taken to preserve what was wanted and remove unmanaged grouth on the land. It is now back as a parade ground and the chapel sits in its own historic grounds, framed by the historic boundary, it shines and has a bright future.
Thanks is given to all the craft people that has made this happen. This much loved building now with purpose and future, what we all want.
